There are 296 lakes found within the Huascaran National Park. Most of these are of glacial origin and cover a surface area of 28.1 square kilometers. In the HNP, there are a dozen "aging" lakes which are located in the depths of the valleys. These lakes are characterized by the variety of colors and the diversity of plant life found in them. Sometimes, due to the type of terrain in which they are located, they acquire fascinating hues. Some of them serve as natural reserves for birds and fish. Others are natural dams for generating electricity. |
